LAURIE – this international project represents a low-risk approach to continuous professional development for psychiatrists using low-fidelity simulations of clinical cases. The presented set of Virtual Patients suffering from schizophrenia are inspired by real-world patients and present imaginary interactive stories.

The LAURIE project extends on-line training opportunities for young psychiatrists and provides them with features of life-long learning gamification.

LIFE-LONG LEARNING
IN PSYCHIATRY

A 20-year-old patient being treated for a severe psychiatric disorder.

In this story, you act as a doctor in a closed ward of an unspecified psychiatric clinic, which is part of a university teaching hospital. In high-level specialist consultations, your clinic provides, in addition to standard psychiatric care, care for more difficult patients, especially those who may have various somatic comorbidities, which are better addressed in the context of a complex university hospital.

Play the case

A Virtual Patient is an interactive computer simulation of a real clinical situation or a case that is designed for medical education. In several languages, the LAURIE project delivers Virtual Patients, a form of serious game providing an interactive method of education, which perfectly complements traditional learning practices. This gamification of training in psychiatry facilitates the development of specific skills such as clinical reasoning, decision making, and critical thinking. Adoption and integration of these computer simulations into the learning process has been found to be highly beneficial by learners and educators alike 1,2,3.
